Amazon Storage Gateway automates creating new virtual tapes on Tape Gateway, helping you eliminate manual management of new tapes, easily manage large deployments, and efficiently scale growing on-premises backup and archive storage needs. With this enhancement, Tape Gateway automatically creates new virtual tapes to maintain the minimum number of available tapes you configure and then makes these new tapes available for import by the backup application, enabling your backup jobs to run without interruption. Automatic tape creation removes the need for custom scripting as well as the manual process to create new virtual tapes.
Tape Gateway supports all leading backup applications and enables you to replace using physical tapes on premises with virtual tapes in Amazon Web Services without changing backup workflows. Tape Gateway caches virtual tapes on premises for low-latency data access, secures data between the gateway and Amazon Web Services for data transfer, compresses data, and transitions virtual tapes between Amazon S3 and Amazon S3 Glacier or Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive to minimize your storage costs.
This capability is available on new gateways starting today and will be made available on existing gateways through a software update starting April 30, 2020. To get started with using Tape Gateway, see step-by-step instructions in the Amazon Storage Gateway User Guide.
