Beginning April 1, 2022, the inter-Availability Zone (AZ) data transfer within the same Amazon Web Services Region for Amazon PrivateLink, and Amazon Transit Gateway is free of charge. Previously, customers incurred an inter-AZ data transfer charge for sending data across availability zones while using these networking services. With this pricing change, inter-AZ data transfer for these services is free of charge, making it even more cost-effective for customers to run multi-AZ workloads.

Customers do not need to make any changes to their existing VPC Interface Endpoints/Transit Gateway Elastic Network Interfaces to benefit from this price reduction as these changes will be automatically applied to their Amazon Web Services bills. Customers can also view their free data transfer usage (for these networking services) in Cost Explorer or Cost & Usage Report. This usage is captured under the “Region_Name-DataTransfer-xAZ-In/Out-Bytes” Usage Type.

Below are additional details on how this pricing change impacts each of the affected networking services:

Amazon PrivateLink: All inter-Availability Zone (AZ) data transfer charges associated with accessing services via a VPC Interface Endpoint (powered by Amazon PrivateLink) are now free of charge. These changes apply only to VPC Interface Endpoints and not Gateway Load Balancer Endpoints. There are no changes to the data processing charges for VPC Interface Endpoints and these will continue to be charged at the standard data processing rates.

Amazon Transit Gateway: All data transfer charges across Availability Zones (AZs) over private IP address within the same Amazon Web Services Region via Transit Gateway are now free of charge. There are no changes to the inter-region data transfer or Transit Gateway data processing charges and they will continue to be charged at the standard inter-region data transfer and data processing rates respectively.

These price reductions will apply to Amazon Web Services China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet and Amazon Web Services China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD. For more pricing details on these services, please visit the Amazon VPC pricing page.
