Amazon Snow device updates
Since its launch in 2015, customers have used Amazon Snow devices to move data to the Amazon Web Services Cloud and to run workloads at the edge. Our innovations since have made moving data to Amazon Web Services Cloud and running workloads at the edge, faster, more efficient, and more cost effective. During the same time, network bandwidth has increased exponentially, and we have introduced services such as Amazon DataSync, a service that automates and accelerates moving data between on premises and Amazon Web Services Cloud, and customers have taken advantage of the network speed increases to move tens of petabytes of data to Amazon Web Services Cloud using services like Amazon Direct Connect, a service that delivers consistent, low-latency performance for moving data to Amazon Web Services Cloud by linking your network.
Effective November 12, 2024, we discontinued Amazon Snow service in the Amazon Web Services China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet and in the Amazon Web Services China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD due to the end-of-life of Amazon Snowball Edge Storage Optimized 80TB device.
Alternatives for data migration
For the majority of data migration workloads, customers should use Amazon DataSync. Amazon DataSync simplifies data migration and helps you quickly, easily, and securely transfer your file or object data to Amazon Web Services storage services. Amazon DataSync gives customers a purpose-built service to simplify and automate data transfers. Amazon DataSync removes the operational burden of writing and maintaining code, buying and operating data transfer software, and manually ensuring data transfers are executed and verified. Amazon DataSync integrates with Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon EventBridge for easy monitoring of metrics, logs, and events. Amazon DataSync also compresses data before transit, identifies only the objects that have changed and need to be copied, and automatically recovers from network interruptions. To get started, visit the Amazon DataSync console. To learn more, view the Amazon DataSync documentation.
